If you’re getting pumped about the upcoming boating season, you’re not the only one! Before you get caught up in all the excitement, you want to make sure you’re prepared. Zoomers RV has created this guide with some important pre-season boat maintenance tips. Read on for more details!
Initial Inspection
When you first remove your boat from storage, you’ll want to perform a thorough inspection. Winter damage comes in many forms, including mold and mildew, insect nesting, animal infestation, and so forth. Open up the hatch and the motor bay to get a better look. If you encounter pests, eradicate them and clean up any mess left behind. Mold and mildew will need to be properly cleaned to prevent it from spreading. Check the exterior to confirm the hull has not sustained any major damage. If so, you may need to consult a professional.
Safety Gear & Documentation
Before you can hit the water and soak up some rays, you’ll need to check the condition of your safety gear as well as your documentation. Inspect the life jackets and personal flotation devices for any signs of wear or damage that need to be replaced. Replenish your first-aid kit with fresh supplies. Confirm your vessel has up-to-date signal flares and fire extinguishers. Review all of your important documents, including registration, insurance, and licensing. Make sure everything is current and stored inside a protective waterproof folio.
Clean the Interior & Exterior
When you think of pre-season boat maintenance, cleaning might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, several months in storage calls for a good cleaning. Sweep up any debris and clean the dust off the control panels. Clean and shine the glass surfaces for better visibility. Use a mild marine boat cleaner on the hull and an aluminum antioxidant cleaner to polish and shine any aluminum parts. If you want to go the extra mile, you can wax the exterior with a marine-grade wax that won’t deteriorate in the water.
Inspect the Cover
Last but not least, inspect your boat cover to see if it needs repairs. You’re looking for holes that need patching or mold and mildew that needs to be cleaned. Choose a cleaner that is safe to use on your cover’s material. You may use a vinyl cleaner rather than ammonia or bleach to clean a vinyl cover. If your cover is beyond repair, it might be time to invest in a new one.
