Leveling your Travel Trailer

Leveling your travel trailer helps to create a more comfortable RV camping experience. Of course, not all travel trailer models have automatic leveling systems, and the process of leveling a travel trailer can feel time-consuming and dull. If you’re a travel trailer owner who wants to know more about how to make the leveling process easier, check out this guide from Zoomers RV.

Find a Suitable Location

The best way to make leveling your travel trailer less arduous is by finding the right starting location. If you level on flat ground, you won’t have to compensate for uneven terrain. Avoid leveling on loose materials like sand or gravel, since these materials can shift as you level and make things harder. Of course, you won’t always have your choice of sites, so try to work within your limitations.

Level from Side to Side

Use a level to determine which side of your travel trailer needs to be raised and by how much. Move your travel trailer and tow vehicle forward and then place leveling blocks or boards at the spots where your travel tires are going to rest. Back up your trailer and check to see if things are even. Make any adjustments and then repeat the process until the travel trailer is even. Once you’re sure that everything is even from side to side, secure the wheels and disconnect your tow vehicle.

Level from Front to Back

Luckily, leveling your travel trailer from front to back is a lot easier. Simply adjust the hitch using your jack. Once your level says everything is even, lock your hitch.

Stabilize

Your last step will be to stabilize your travel trailer so that all your hard work doesn’t get undone. Some travel trailers have automatic jacks, though others require a special tool to adjust the jacks. Regardless, your jacks should be firmly pressed into the ground but not shoved into it. Do not attempt to level your travel trailer using your jacks. The jacks are meant to support weight, not adjust to it. Every time you make an adjustment to one jack, you’ll usually need to adjust the other three as well, which can make the leveling process far more difficult.
