Motorhomes are a convenient all-in-one means of transport and accommodation. You get a reliable vehicle with cozy and spacious living quarters inside. But if you know anything about motorhomes, you know that they come in three different styles, called “classes.” Class A and Class C motorhomes are the larger sizes, and generally, people with families or those who travel in large groups choose between these two styles.
But which one is right for you? There are some important differences to be aware of and with such an expensive purchase, you’ll want to be sure you’re making the right choice.
Similarities
Class A and Class C motorhomes both sleep at least three people, but often many more than that, thanks to slide-outs and clever pieces of fold-out or modular furniture that turn into additional bunks. Each one has a full bathroom (sometimes more than one!) with a separate toilet and shower, rather than a space-saving “wet bath” that combines these two items in one space. Class A and Class C motorhomes also have tons of storage space on board.
Differences
Class A motorhomes are generally the larger size of the two types because they’re constructed on a bus-style chassis. They can be up to 45’ long in some cases and always feature a panoramic windshield and an integrated driving cab that often has swivel seats. Class A motorhomes often have larger and more numerous furnishings, with separated dining and living rooms.
Class C motorhomes resemble trucks more than anything else, with separated driving cabs and an overhanging alcove above the cab that can be used for either a sleeping berth or more storage space. Class C motorhomes usually have more convertible furniture, such as dinettes or tables that convert into beds or sofas. Class C motorhomes also aren’t as long as their Class A counterparts, but slide-outs help to maximize the interior space.
Benefits
It’s hard to find any RV that’s more spacious than a Class A motorhome. This style of motorhome has the most interior room, the most storage space and the highest-quality amenities, hands-down. Class A motorhomes are also excellent for full-time living and four-season travel. They are perfect for big families.
Class C motorhomes are much easier to drive due to their lower center of gravity that’s more similar to what you’d find in a passenger car or truck. They also are less challenging to park, especially in small spaces, so you can take them pretty much anywhere. Class C motorhomes are more fuel-efficient than Class A motorhomes since they’re smaller and lighter. Overall, a Class C motorhome is the more affordable choice.
Drawbacks
Class A motorhomes are probably the most expensive RVs you’ll ever find. They do not get good gas mileage, which means you end up spending more on fuel, and their maintenance, repair and insurance costs also tend to be higher. You will probably find it challenging to learn how to drive your Class A motorhome and it won’t fit on smaller campgrounds or in cramped parking lots.
Class C motorhomes aren’t as well-appointed and are smaller, with less luxurious features. Their exterior storage space is extremely limited. Because the driving cab is separated from the interior of the motorhome, you also can’t see what’s going on while you’re driving and if you need something from the back, you’ll have to pull over.
Ultimately, the motorhome class you choose is up to you, but we hope this comparison has given you some helpful guidance so you can finalize your decision.
